Thought this was an interesting use of mobile phones:

Nigerians use phones to detect fake drugs

The idea is that the phone is not really a "drugs detector"--that's handled by a remote site with the presumably expensive sensor equipment, and the ability to track and organize the samples.

The phone is just a tool to query that remote site.  And there's an identification code to tie it all together.

Interesting stuff.
